Bloating, irregular digestion, constant fatigue. More and more people want to know what is actually going on in their gut. Getting your gut flora analyzed has become easy: modern at-home tests examine your microbiome from a single stool sample. But tests differ enormously in method, depth and price. Here is what you should know before choosing one.
Why analyze your gut flora at all?
Your gut hosts trillions of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and more. Together they influence digestion, your immune system, metabolism and even mood via the gut-brain axis. An analysis shows how diverse and balanced your microbiome is, which key beneficial species are present, and whether patterns associated with digestive complaints can be detected. That makes it a useful starting point if you have been dealing with unexplained gut issues, want to check your gut after a course of antibiotics, or simply want to understand your body better.
The three common methods and why they matter
Culture-based stool tests grow bacteria in the lab. They only capture the small fraction of gut microbes that survive outside the body, most of your microbiome stays invisible.
16S sequencing reads one short marker gene that all bacteria share. It gives a rough overview of bacterial groups, but often cannot identify exact species and detects no viruses, fungi or resistance genes.
Shotgun metagenomic sequencing reads the entire microbial DNA in your sample. It identifies bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites down to species level, and can additionally assess functional potential and antibiotic resistance genes. It is the current scientific gold standard for microbiome analysis. Curious about the differences in detail? Read why microbiome research is moving beyond 16S.
How an at-home analysis works
- Order your test kit online – it arrives with everything you need.
- Collect a small stool sample at home using the included tube. It takes a few minutes.
- Send the sample to the lab in the prepaid return envelope.
- Receive your report digitally, typically within a few weeks, with clear explanations and personalised recommendations.
What does it cost?
Simple culture-based or 16S tests start around €60–100. Comprehensive shotgun-based analyses range from roughly €130 to €250, depending on the depth of evaluation. When comparing prices, look at what you actually get: how many organism groups are covered, whether species-level resolution is included, and whether your data can be re-analysed later as science advances.
What a gut flora analysis can (and cannot) tell you
A microbiome analysis provides scientific insights and risk associations: diversity, balance, notable species, functional patterns. It is not a medical diagnosis. If you have acute or severe symptoms, always see a doctor, ideally with your report in hand, as it can be a valuable basis for that conversation.
